  1. Summary
  2. Hanging a heavy picture is a little more involved than
  3. hanging a lightweight picture with a hook. These steps
  4. show how to use a strip of wood (the batten) cut at
  5. an angle along its length, to make a very secure
  6. attachment for the picture, while still allowing it to
  7. be removed from the wall easily:

  9.     1    Cutting the batten
  10.     2    Drilling clearance holes
  11.     3    Attaching one batten to the wall 
  12.     4    Attaching the other batten to the frame
  13.     5    Hanging the frame

  21. Step 1 - Cutting the batten
  22. Battens can be used to provide the extra support that
  23. heavy pictures need. Use a piece of timber about  50mm
  24. by 20mm,which is slightly shorter than the width of the
  25. picture. Cut the timber 16mm from the top at an angle
  26. of 45 degrees toward the centre. One piece is going to
  27. attach to the wall, the other piece to the picture.
  28. Because of the angle, one can be hung on the other.

  30. Step 2 - Drilling clearance holes
  31. The battens will fit together in the manner shown -
  32. the lower piece will be attached to the wall, the upper
  33. piece to the picture.Drill holes through the battens so
  34. you can attach the halves of the batten to the picture
  35. and the wall. Note that these holes need to be very
  36. slightly larger than the shaft on the screws that will
  37.  be used to fix them.

  39. Step 3 - Attaching one batten to the wall
  40. Position the half batten on the wall and ensure it is
  41. horizontal using a spirit level. Mark the position of
  42. the holes on the wall with a bradawl. Drill the holes
  43. and attach the half batten to the wall with the upper
  44. edge on the outer side as shown.

  46. Step 4 - Attaching the other batten to the frame
  47. Screw the other half of the batten to the frame with
  48. the lower edge on the outer side as shown, that is,
  49. with the angle of the cut facing down as a mirror
  50. image to the batten attached to the wall.

  52. Step 5 - Hanging the frame
  53. You can now hang the frame batten to the wall batten
  54. as shown.
